As a small, family-owned endeavor, every formula we produce is “small batch”. One might use the terms “artisanal” or “hand-crafted”; we prefer the term “Ritual-worthy”. We apply the same standards in our ingredient selection for our formulas as we do in preparing celebratory meals for loved ones and choosing items for our personal altars.

Purity; quality; sustainability; intrinsic energy or “life force” emitted; multi-faceted benefits; organoleptic qualities; metaphysical qualities.

We searched the world to meet these standards. Partnering with suppliers who do the same is a vital part of our mission. Are we done? Not by a long shot!

The world is ever-changing, and so is the understanding of our relationship with it. We learn, we grow, we ask questions.

We maintain full documentation for every ingredient we use. If you would like more information on any of our products or ingredients, please just ask. We are delighted to share!

  • A blend of five natural plant extracts – bilberry (aka European blueberry), sugarcane, orange, lemon and sugar maple which contain four alpha-hydroxy acids.

It is used to improve the appearance of fine lines and surface wrinkles and to improve skin tone and texture by gently exfoliating corneocytes in the outermost layer of skin. It also helps to unblock and cleanse pores.

  • Allantoin has historically been extracted from the roots and leaves of the comfrey plant.

However, our modern demand for this much sought-after ingredient has resulted in its synthetic production, which is nature-identical and 99-100% pure.

Allantoin has a reputation for soothing and relieving skin irritations, hydrating and moisturizing.

It also functions as a mild keratoplastic and keratolytic, assisting with the natural desquamation process of the skin's surface, softening rough patches and stimulating cellular turnover.

Allantoin is included in our formulas to help reduce the appearance of pore size, fine lines and wrinkles. It is added to formulas for mature, dry, irritated and sensitive skin. This ingredient is vegan, is not tested on animals, and is GMO-free.

  • Oil from the seed of the sweet almond tree, Prunus amygdalus var dulcis. We use a cold-pressed sweet almond oil, rich in the vitamins and antioxidants which heat can destroy but which cold milling preserves.

Almonds are now widely grown in California, although recent droughts greatly reduced production here. They are native to Iran/Persia and nearby countries of the Levant.

This extract is rich in vitamins E, A and of B-complex, as well as in proteins, fatty acids and minerals such as calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, selenium and zinc. Having said all that, it is used as a very superior carrier oil.

  • Description:

INCI Name: Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) Leaf Juice Powder

Growing/Harvesting Method: Certified Organic; Sustainably sourced

    Plant Part Used: Leaves

Extraction Method: To produce this free flowing powder, organic aloe vera spears are first harvested and washed before being ground up. The pulp and fibrous material is removed before the remaining contents are heat treated, filtered, and concentrated to 100x. The concentrated aloe material is thoroughly filtered and then spray dried.

    Country of Origin: Mexico

Aroma Profile: Characteristic of the plant

    Contraindications: None known

    Reported and Historical Uses:

Skin: Used extensively in health and cosmetic industry for its soothing and humectant capabilities.

This comes as a dried form of extract from organic Aloe barbadensis leaf juice.

It contains amino acids, enzymes, hormones, minerals, saponins, sterols, starch, lectins and vitamins.

It’s used to help moisturize, invigorate and soothe. It seems that, while vera is the Latin for “true,” the etymology of “aloe,” like that of the English word “dog,” remains a very great mystery!

  • The Prunus armeniaca (apricot) kernel oil used by us is cold-pressed.

A naturally light oil, it is pure and unrefined. While mostly made up of oleic and linoleic acids, both unsaturated fatty acids, it also contains palmitic, palmitoleic and stearic acids, as well as various B vitamins, vitamin C and vitamin E.

Apricot kernel oil is particularly suited to dry, sensitive, irritated and mature skin.

  • This cold-pressed carrier oil is used as an emollient.

It is extracted from seeds of the fascinating, flamboyant baobab tree, Adansonia digitata.

A member of the hibiscus, mallows or Malvaceae family, its synonyms include Bottle Tree, Upside-down Tree, Monkey Bread Tree and Tree of Life.

So gigantic are baobabs, and such is the manner in which they die and dry out from the inside, creating gigantic hollow structures, that humans have lived inside dead specimens of them for thousands of years.

Native to SW Asia, to Africa (including Madagascar), and to Australia (including Tasmania) the baobab also features in best-selling French book to date, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s “The Little Prince”.

“It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye” may be the most frequently quoted line from “The Little Prince”.

  • Description:

INCI Name: Chamomilla Recutita Flower Oil

Growing/Harvesting Method: Certified Organic; Ethically sourced

    Plant Part Used: Flowers

    Extraction Method: Steam distilled

    Country of Origin: Nepal

Aroma Profile: Warm, sweet, fruity, herbaceous

    Contraindications: Dilute before using.

    Reported and Historical Uses:

Skin: Suitable for all skin types. Supports overall skin health; assists with wound management; relieves pain and heat associated with burns, rashes and insect bites; deeply nourishing; sebum balancing.

Emotional Body: Calming; helps dissipate feelings of anger and frustration.

This is a steam distilled, organic, essential oil which comes from the flowers of Matricaria recutita L. (synonym of Matricaria chamomilla L), and is also known as German chamomile.

Globally, German/blue chamomile and Roman chamomile are two of the most widely used herbs.

This organic blue chamomile essential oil contains chamazulene, a blue-pigmented sesquiterpene, which can only be formed as a result of the intense heat of distillation from the parent chemical, matricin, a constituent found mostly in the flowers of the plant.

We use blue chamomile in our formulas for its bioactive properties as well as for its fragrance.

  • Description:

INCI Name: Tanacetum Annuum (Blue Tansy) Flower Oil

Growing/Harvesting Method: 100% Natural; Wildcrafted; Ethically sourced

    Plant Part Used: Flowering tops

    Extraction Method: Steam distilled

    Country of Origin: Morocco

Aroma Profile: Highly aromatic, warm, bitter-green, herbaceous aroma with softly camphor top notes; warm, woody-herbaceous

Contraindications: Due to the presence of camphor (a ketone), we recommend avoiding use with children less than 10 years of age, the elderly, those with epilepsy, and pregnant and/or nursing women. Dilute before using.

    Reported and Historical Uses:

Skin: Suitable for all skin types. Chamazulene, the component responsible for the striking blue color, is widely recognized for its skin-soothing benefits. Sabinene, another component, helps diminish blemishes by killing pimple-causing bacteria and clearing out pores. Anti-oxidant; reduces appearance of photoaging and scarring.

Emotional Body: Calming, clarifying energy; hormone regulation; clears anxiety

In blue tansy essential oil, also known as Moroccan blue chamomile, chamazulene is responsible for the intense deep blue color of this essential oil which is yielded by the distillation of the leaves and tops of the tansy herb, Tanacetum annuum.

This special oil also contains 1,8-cineole, characteristic of eucalypts, as well as camphor and sabinene. The concentration of the chamazulene harvested varies with the time of year.

It comes from Morocco and has been used in aromatherapy for its calming effects.

Chamazule, sabinene and camphor, all three of which are found in blue tansy, have each been been shown to reduce inflammation, and this medicinal herb has been reported as having been grown in the gardens of Charlemagne, of the ancient Greeks, and of a European continental monastery of St Gall.

We use organic blue tansy essential oil in our formulas for its bioactive properties as well as its fragrance.

  • We use oil cold pressed from the seeds of borage, officially Borago officialanis or the (wild) starflower.

This oil is rich in nutrients including antioxidants and essential fatty acids.

Its extraordinarily high levels of gamma linoleic acid (at up to 24% perhaps unsurpassed by any other known seed oil) help make it a carrier oil par excellence, used for moisturizing, soothing and softening skin.

Hair: Heals and conditions scalp to assist with stronger hair growth.

Emotional Body: A gentle guide that helps us understand and move through fears; makes space for healing and forgiveness to occur; assists with better communication.

Calendula, derived from daisies or marigolds has a history of use in magic, in sacred rituals, as well as in medicines and home remedies. Additionally, it has a history as a natural food colorant and flavor enhancer dating back many centuries in various cultures.

The name comes from the Latin, calends or kalends, after the first day of the month on the ancient Roman calendar. Because calendula flowers can bloom in every month of the year in the temperate, Mediterranean climate, it seemed a fitting name.

We use a CO2 extraction of calendula for its greater stability and purity.

The low temperature CO2 extraction process for carrier oils ensures a product that more closely resembles that which is found in the raw plant material and also has a longer shelf life than cold pressed versions.

Furthermore, CO2 carrier oils meet strict heavy metal requirements and contain no carbohydrates, protein, or inorganic salts.

We use calendula CO2 extract in our formulas for its bioactive properties as well as its fragrance.

  • Camellia oil is produced from the seeds of a flowering tree related to the tea family. It is intensely moisturizing and penetrates the skin quickly, leaving a smooth but greaseless feel.

This unrefined carrier oil, sourced from Japan, is exceedingly rich in fatty acids (oleic, linoleic and palmitic). It also contains numerous antioxidant polyphenols and we use it in our formulas to help soothe dry, flaky, or irritated skin.

  • Cera Bellina is a modified beeswax in which the fatty acids have been converted into esters.

When combined with oils, it has the ability to inhibit crystallization, lending stability to balms and gels.

Its discovery in the last century made it possible to create particularly smooth, satiny gels.

  • Cetyl alcohol NF is a naturally occurring fatty alcohol used as an emulsion stabilizer and opacifier.

  • Citric acid is found in various fruits and vegetables, but most notably in citrus fruits.

Lemons and limes are exceptionally rich in it.

It’s said that it can comprise as much as 8% of the dry weight of these fruits.

After World War I interfered with Italian exports, industrial production through microbial synthesis of citric acid took off.

  • Cocoa butter, also known as theobroma ("food of the gods") oil is much sought after - partly for the unique narrow melting range which enables chocolate to melt in one's mouth, but not at room temperatures.

To produce the butter, cocoa beans are fermented, roasted, de-shelled and then pressed.

Cocoa butter is a rich source of phytochemicals which may improve blood flow to the skin and slow the effects of aging by protecting the skin from photo damage.

We use both raw organic cocoa butter and organic deodorized cocoa butter, depending on the application and desired aroma.

  • A coconut-oil-derived, natural emollient, this is used as an alternative to silicones for softening and conditioning skin.

This rare and prized essential oil is obtained through the distillation of the heartwood of the Aquilaria genus, a type of flowering tree found in multiple regions, including Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam (A. crassna), the Philippines (A. filaria), northeastern India, Burma, Malaysia, Sumatra, and Borneo (A. agallocha). The unique source of this valuable substance are those trees that have fallen victim to a parasitic fungus. In reaction to the infection, these trees generate a resin that, over time, develops a rich and fragrant dark aroma."

Please note: Our vendor has communicated: “The trees from which we source our Agarwood essential oil are from a forest in Vietnam where they are sustainably harvested and periodically replanted. They are inoculated by hand when they reach 10 years of age; after the infection has been allowed to propagate for 2 years, the trees are harvested for distillation.” They maintain records to this effect.

We use Agarwood essential oil in our formulas for its bioactive properties as well as its fragrance.

  • Description:

    INCI Name: Amber Extract

    Growing/Harvesting Method: Mined, not cultivated

Plant Part Used: Fossilized tree resin

Extraction Method: Dry distillation under extreme pressure

    Country of Origin: Himalayan Mountains

Aroma Profile: Smoky, resinous, leathery, tar-like, woody-dry notes and hints of pine and balsamic overtones; extremely tenacious. Reminiscent of ancient altars.

    Contraindications: None known

    Reported and Historical Uses:

Skin: Suitable for all skin types, especially for skin experiencing hormone-induced acne; anti-inflammatory; stimulates recovery from skin infections; promotes blood circulation.

Emotional Body: Balance, Harmony; Cleansing, Protection, Purification; Inspiration; calms the mind; stimulates the libido

While there are several sources for amber throughout the world, the rare form of amber oil we use is extracted from 35-million-year-old Himalayan fossilized tree resin.

Unlike other essential oils which are derived from living plants, there is no essential oil that can be directly obtained from the fossilized resin. Instead, the oil is obtained by dry distillation, a process by which the resin is subjected to great heat until an oily substance is obtained.

The fragrance of this oil is surely one of the most unique olfactory experiences available, and very different from that of amber perfumes commonly sold: perhaps it can transport us back millions of years, or, at least, give us a true whiff of ancient esoteric memories?

We use Fossilized Amber essential oil in our formulas for its bioactive properties as well as its fragrance.

Emotional Body: Widely used in ceremonial incense; warming; opening; comforting; calms nervous tension and promotes restful sleep.

Balsams or balms are the aromatic resins of certain trees, and this Balsam of Peru comes from Myroxylon balsamum var. pereirae, the Peru balsam tree.

This essential oil has a vanilla-like aroma.

The trees from which it is produced grow mostly along the Balsam Coast of El Salvador, near the Pacific Ocean, where they are often planted to afford shade to coffee plantations.

Reportedly, Balsam of Peru was used by the early Mayan culture as an incense for ceremonial purposes, and sixteenth century popes sanctioned its use as a substitute for the less available Mecca balsam, aka “Balm of Gilead,” for ceremonial incense and for anointing.

We use Balsam of Peru in our formulas for its bioactive properties as well as for its fragrance.

  • Description:

INCI Name: Styrax Benzoin (Benzoin) Gum Extract

Growing/Harvesting Method: 100% Natural; Ethically sourced

    Plant Part Used: Gum oleoresin

    Extraction Method: Alcohol extract

    Country of Origin: Sumatra

Aroma Profile: Rich, intensely sweet, warm, powdery, balsamic, vanilla-like aroma, with a subtle spicy/cinnamon-like undertone

    Reported and Historical Uses:

Skin: Suitable for all skin types. Antimicrobial, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and astringent; reduces the appearance and size of pores while cleaning the skin; protects the skin by forming an invisible film that prevents moisture loss, improves skin's elasticity and smooths the skin; aids healing

Emotional Body: Provides purification, blessings, prosperity; Benzoin resin is a “yang” sedative and is used as an effective remedy for stagnation. Warming to the heart and increases circulation. Commonly used as church incense for its potent effects.

Benzoin, even if it sounds like a chemical cousin of benzene, is actually a resinous tree of the Styracaceae family. The Styrax genus includes some 130-odd species of trees/shrubs growing in three main areas - SE Asia, the SE of North America, and South America, with one species growing in the Mediterranean region.

Farmers climb up to a height of 30 feet using rope ladders to make an incision in the bark in order to release the gum. At 7-10 years old, one tree can provide an average of up to 0.5 kilo of resin per year, and 1.2 kilos of exudate are required to make 1 kilo of benzoin resinoid.

Benzoin has a rich, balsamic, vanilla-like aroma. We use Benzoin oil from Sumatra in our formulas for its bioactive properties as well as its fragrance.

  • This is used as a (natural) preservative in the hydrolyzed oat protein we use.

INCI Name: Citrus Aurantium Bergamia (Bergamot) Fruit Oil

Growing/Harvesting Method: Certified Organic; Ethically sourced

    Plant Part Used: Peel

Extraction Method: Cold pressed and vacuum distilled

    Country of Origin: Italy

    Reported and Historical Uses:

Skin: Suitable for all skin types. Anti-inflammatory; anti-fungal; anti-bacterial

Emotional Body: Deeply relaxing, restorative and calming; helps diffuse anger and frustration; supports deep sleep.

Bergamot, extracted from citrus peel, is the ingredient which gives Earl Grey tea its very distinctive flavor.

A member of the Rutaceae family originating either in Northern Italy or the Canary Islands, the Citrus aurantium var. bergamia tree from which this bergamot comes produces a small, bitter, pear-shaped fruit, the peel of which is pressed for this aromatic oil.

We use Bergamot in our formulas for its bioactive properties as well as for its fragrance.

  • This naturally occurring substance is used as a humectant and moisturizer.

Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the human body, making up 1.5 to 2% of the total body weight. Approximately 1,200 g of calcium are present in the body of an adult human; more than 99% of that amount is found in bones.

Calcium is essential for mammalian bone formation, maintenance and repair, and occurs naturally in several forms and in many foods. Calcium gluconate is a version of calcium found in gluconic acid, a carboxylic acid found in plants, especially fruits, and in honey.

  • Description:

INCI Name: Daucus Carota (Carrot) Seed Oil

Growing/Harvesting Method: Certified Organic; Ethically sourced

    Plant Part Used: Seeds

    Extraction Method: Steam distilled

    Country of Origin: India

    Aroma Profile: Woody, spicy-sweet, earthy

Contraindications: Avoid during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. Dilute before use.

This organic essential oil has a dry, sweet-woody, earthy aroma. It is derived from Daucus carota, also known as Wild Carrot, Bishop’s Lace or Queen Anne’s Lace.

Carrot Seed essential oil is often added to facial masks as well as to other preparations for mature skin. This is at least in part because carotol, its dominant sesquiterpene alcohol, is considered to be particularly appropriate for such gently caring preparations.

We use carrot seed essential oil in our formulas for its bioactive properties as well as for its fragrance.

  • Description:

INCI Name: Cedrus Atlantica Wood Oil

Growing/Harvesting Method: Wild Harvested; Ethically sourced

    Plant Part Used: Wood

    Extraction Method: Steam distilled

    Country of Origin: Morocco

Aroma Profile: Warm, woody, earthy, slightly resinous

    Contraindications: None known

    Reported and Historical Uses:

Skin: Suitable for all skin types. Clarifying; assists with congested, dull skin by improving healthy microbial balance.

Emotional Body: Used for promoting centeredness, abundance, calm and stability.

Atlas cedarwood essential oil has been used in aromatherapy as well as in natural perfumes and in meditation blends.

Apart from use of its essential oil derivative for cosmetics and perfumes, Atlas cedarwood has for millennia been used for ship-building, and in the construction of shrines and of bath houses; and it is listed as one of the earliest incense materials.

Great Cedrus atlantica forests once swathed high mountains in North Africa, but their timber was much sought-after, and logging and fires have made it scarce. Thankfully, it is still being distilled from cedar stumps, clean-up cuts and sawdust so that cedar sustainability can be addressed by responsible producers.

The Atlas cedarwood oil we use, like Himalayan cedarwood oil, is a true cedar oil, unlike the oils from Texas cedarwood and Virginia cedarwood, which are actually junipers.

We use organic Atlas cedarwood essential oil in our formulas for its bioactive properties as well as for its fragrance.

  • Our algae is an extract made from mixed species of seaweed and whole plant algae in a base of glycerin and water. We use this extract for its gentle anti-oxidant properties.

Algae extract is also a wonderful moisturizer, particularly suited to sensitive and irritated skin.

  • Our USDA certified organic avocado oil is cold pressed from the green flesh of the avocado to produce an oil which is emollient and so highly penetrating that it is excellent for use on dry skin.

Its high content of both unsaturated and essential fatty acids make it ideal for use in nourishing, moisturizing skin and hair formulations.

The refinement process removes the heavy smell that otherwise can make this oil difficult to use, as well as giving it a lighter color and consistency, and enabling this powerful oil to be more elegantly blended into cosmetic formulations.

  • This salt occurs naturally as the mineral known as nahcolite or thermocolite, but is better known as sodium bicarbonate, sodium hydrogen carbonate or baking soda. We use it as a mild mechanical exfoliant.

  • The castor oil we use is organic and cold pressed.

It is derived from the seeds of a member of the Euphorbiaceae - or spurge - family, Ricinus communis.

Curiously, these seeds are known as “castor beans” though they are not true beans, such as are the seeds of many Fabaceae.

Traditionally, this spurge derivative has been used as a purgative or laxative, but nowadays it finds use simply as a highly emollient and very stable fat in soap making.

  • Derived from olive oil, this naturally occurring ester is used as an emulsifier and texture enhancer.

  • Description: also known as Labdanum

INCI Name: Cistus Ladaniferus (Rock Rose) Leaf/Stem Oil

Growing/Harvesting Method: 100% Natural; Ethically sourced

Plant Part Used: Leaves and Tops

    Extraction Method: Steam distilled

    Country of Origin: Spain

Aroma Profile: Considered a substitute for Ambergris (from Sperm Whales) and, when combined with Ambrette, a substitute for true Musk (from Musk Deer). Herbaceous, balsamic-resinous with sweet honey-like undertones.

    Contraindications: Dilute before using.

    Reported and Historical Uses:

Skin: Suitable for all skin types. Deeply nourishing and used to heal old scars and other skin challenges. May be used in massage and bath formulas as well.

Emotional Body: Cooling and drying energy to relax the mind, sooth anxiety and depression – bringing calm. Used to inspire sensual mood. Used in bath or massage to celebrate a loved one.

Cistus or Rock rose, Cistus ladanifer, refers to the cistus plant, itself (and its essential oil and various extracts) whereas labdanum is the absolute, extracted and distilled from the natural, sticky oleoresin produced by the same plant.

Labdanum is mostly used in perfumery, whereas the essential oil, cistus, is used in skin care.

In ancient times, cistus was obtained by combing the legs of sheep and goats which had recently grazed on cistus plants.

Our organic cistus essential oil is distilled directly from the leaves rather than from the crude labdanum gum.

Historically, like labdanum, cistus has also been considered a substitute for ambergris (from sperm whales) and, in combination with ambrette (the aromatic musk mallow), a substitute for true musk (from musk deer).

The vast Cistaceae family is renowned for being particularly successful at colonizing great areas of eroded soils after fires or heavy grazing. They are a biologically important species insofar as they facilitate an underground symbiotic web of mycorrhizae essential to soil health. On the island of Corsica, birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte, tiny birds have been observed lining their nests with a panoply of aromatic herbs, including cistus.

We use organic cistus essential oil from Spain in our formulas for its bioactive properties as well as for its fragrance.

  • Bentonite clay is composed of weathered and volcanic ash sediments.

It is highly absorbent and perfect for oily and acne-prone skin.

Containing more than 50 trace minerals, Bentonite clay is highly nourishing for the skin.

It may also help draw dirt, toxins and excess sebum from the pores.

Because Bentonite clay is so absorbent (swelling up to 14 times its weight when water is added), it is best to use no more than once per week until you know how your skin reacts - and please make sure to hydrate your skin immediately after use.

  • This is a plant-derived extract from the date-palm kernel, Phoenix dactylifera

It is used for its reputed anti-wrinkle and free-radical-scavenging properties. It contains seven natural compounds, all said to work synergistically to delay the visible signs of aging. The magnificent seven are: phytosterol, phytosteroids, isoflavones, ursolic acid, policosanols, tocotrienols and vitamin A.

  • Description:

INCI Name: Pelargonium Graveolens (Geranium) Oil

Growing/Harvesting Method: Certified Organic; Ethically sourced

Plant Part Used: Leaves and Flowering Tops

    Extraction Method: Steamed distilled

    Country of Origin: Reunion Islands

Aroma Profile: Fresh, softly lemony-rose aroma with green, herbaceous notes.

    Contraindications: Dilute before using.

Emotional Body: Mood lifter; promotes feelings of well-being; lifts spirit and promotes sensual feelings.

Geraniums, native to South Africa and belonging to the Pelargonium genus, include approximately 270 species and are considered among the most versatile members of the plant kingdom.

Pelargonia offer an array of scents including rose, ginger, apple, coconut, strawberry, mint, nutmeg, citrus, pepper and more. Their aromas are released by little glandular leaf hairs, or trichomes.

Pure geranium essential oil is prized for its astringent effects in skin care.

Its sensual, soothing and calming characteristics ensure that it is found in meditation blends (often together with clary sage and lavender), in body and massage oils, and in diffusers - where it may be mixed with sweet orange essential oil.

We use organic geranium essential oil from Reunion Island in our formulas for its bioactive properties as well as for its fragrance.

  • This is a naturally occurring polyhydroxy acid (PHA) with metal chelating, moisturizing and antioxidant activity.

Like alpha- and beta-hydroxy acids, it acts as a chemical exfoliant, dissolving the "glue" which holds dead skin cells together.

  • Far more goat's than cow’s milk is consumed worldwide.

It is not only thicker, being richer in fat and protein than cow milk, but also relatively hypoallergenic.

Traces of those wild herbs on which goats traditionally browse tend to find their way into the milk so that it has long been recognized as a particularly nutritionally dense food, containing innumerable micronutrients.

We source organic powdered and fresh, raw goat’s milk in the US, as well as powdered organic goat’s milk from the Netherlands.

  • Grape Seed extract or oil is believed to help maintain the skin’s elasticity.

It is often used as a base or carrier oil, as it is very light and has no scent of its own. Grapeseed oil is a nutrient-dense carrier oil.

It contains proanthocyanidins, naturally occurring antioxidant bioflavonoids, along with linoleic acid, an omega-6 fatty acid, and oleic acid, an omega-9 fatty acid.

We use cold pressed grapeseed oil from Italy for its emollient, skin-protective qualities as well as its ability to clear up breakouts and balance skin.

  • Glycerin is also known as "glycerol" in the US and as "glycerine" in other English-speaking parts of the world.

It is present in healthy skin and has been called an endogenous humectant, so that its ancient history of use on human and animal skin in ointments and in preparations of vegetable and/or animal origin is well justified.

Glycerin (exogenous, in cosmetics) is used as a skin protectant and conditioning agent, as a humectant, and for its viscosity-decreasing effect.

  • Green tea is cooling, refreshing & hydrating. It balances oil production and thereby, improves the skin's texture.

Green tea extract contains catechins - polyphenols prized for their antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-carcinogenic properties - along with the antioxidant vitamins C and E and caffeine. The most prominent polyphenolic compound present in green tea, EGCG (epigallocatechin-3-gallate), has been found to exhibit a wide range of therapeutic properties ranging from being sebum-balancing to being anti-inflammatory to reducing the appearance of photoaging damage.

Green tea extract is included in our formulations for all of its beneficial properties.

  • This unrefined, cold-pressed oil is from the seeds or "hearts" of hemp.

Pure, and rich in a fine balance of omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids, this oil is pressed from the seeds rather than from the leaves or flowers of the hemp plant.

It also has a high content of linoleic acid, which is thought to inhibit the overproduction of sebum.

We use it as a carrier oil.

  • This particular, naturally occurring polysaccharide, hyaluronic acid, with its variable molecular weight of 800,000 to 1.5 million DA per molecule, is a naturally occurring polymer with enormous abilities to hold water molecules – up to 500 times its own weight in water – and so to moisturize, hydrate, soothe and protect one’s skin.

It is estimated that a human being of approximately 150 lbs body weight has roughly 15 grams of hyaluron, between connective, epithelial and nerve tissues, our skin and the synovial fluid of our joints included, and that about one third of this is turned over every day.

  • Hydrolyzed Oat Protein is a proprietary extract from whole oats.

Containing 23% oligosaccharides and 3% protein it has the ability to gain up to 50% more moisture at low humidities.

We use it as a humectant - that is to say for binding water within the skin.

  • Jojoba carrier oil is an extract from the seeds of this shrub-type plant which is native to dry, arid parts of northern Mexico and to nearby parts of the US.

Jojoba oil contains esters chemically similar to those which make up 25-30% of human sebum.

Because of its stability and lightweight texture, it is considered a premium oil. We use it for its unique emollient qualities and ability to balance skin function.

More than 97% of jojoba oil is composed of various liquid wax esters, while a combination of mixed tocopherols, free sterols and other unsaponifiables makes up the remainder.

  • Mango Butter helps in healing extremely dry skin. It smoothes fine lines, reduces blemishes and scarring and restores elasticity to the skin.

Mango butter is a fat derived from the seeds found in mango pits.

A product of India, this butter contains omega fatty acids, palmitic, stearic, oleic, linoleic and arachidonic at rates of 4-9%, 35-45%, 35-50%, 1-4% and 2-6%, respectively.

It is used to nourish skin as an emollient, boosting elasticity and suppleness.

  • Meadowfoam seed oil is composed of the lipids and sterols derived from the seeds of meadowfoam, or Limnanthes alba.

A particularly stable plant oil, it is used as a moisturizer, and is said to have four times the water absorbing ability of lanolin.

Meadowfoam oil is quickly absorbed, leaving a light, velvety texture. It is a powerful emollient and its unique properties inhibit the enzymes which degrade collagen, making it superb for use on mature or photodamaged skin.

We source unrefined, cold pressed meadowfoam seed oil.

  • We use both unrefined coconut oil and Fractionated coconut oil, depending on the application. Both types are known to have anti-inflammatory properties and prevent trans-epidermal water loss, helping skin to stay hydrated. Other studies suggest coconut oil may speed wound healing due to its ability to increase collagen, reduce inflammation and reduce microbial growth.

As well as containing medium-chain fatty acids, unrefined coconut oil is so very high in long-chain fatty acids that it is solid up to about 78 degrees Fahrenheit.

Fractionated coconut oil (also known as MCT Oil) consists mainly of the medium-chain fatty acids caprylic acid (C8) and capric acid (C10). It is an especially stable oil, and has been used to moisturize and to promote skin care and healing.

  • Coenzyme Q10 is also known as ubiquinone because it is so widely found in animals and in bacteria.

Though not listed as an approved medicine by the FDA, it is sometimes prescribed as a supplement by doctors and, because of its undoubted free-radical-scavenging potential, this naturally occurring antioxidant is included in some food supplements and also in cosmetics to help protect skin from stressors, to revitalize it, to retain moisture and to tighten the skin.

  • This organic essential oil is steam distilled from the leaves of Eucalyptus globulus, a proud blue gum tree and member of the Myrtaceae family, native to Australia but now grown worldwide.

The aroma of eucalyptus oil is at once gentle and powerful, refreshing and rejuvenating, restorative, cineolic and camphoraceous

The Blue Mountains of New South Wales, just east of Sydney, Australia, get their name from the blue hue given them by the blue gum trees which cover them.

Aboriginal Australians are believed to have used the leaves of gum trees for many millennia both as incense and for skin care.

The essential oil we use, however, is sourced from eucalyptus trees grown in Portugal, and we use it in our formulas for its bioactive properties as well as for its fragrance.

Frankincense, also known as olibanum, or as “oil of Lebanon,” is an aromatic resin with woody, spicy aroma, and a fascinating history and etymology.

People find it grounding, calming and relaxing, but without being sedative, so that using this holy, ancient oil in aromatherapy promotes feelings of tranquility, calm, peace and deep relaxation.

From “franc encens” or “high-quality incense” in (old) French (likely - rather than from the Frankish or French knights of the Crusades) and possibly oleum and Libanum in Latin, or Luban, (milky) white in Arabic.

It has been suggested that frankincense can not only promote slower, deeper breathing, and reduce stress and anxiety, but also even have direct anti-inflammatory effects in humans, at least.

In certain parts of the world, this resin was once prized like gold.

It has traditionally been incorporated in meditation blends with sandalwood or orange to quiet the mind by elevating the spirit, or by encouraging it to emerge.

We use frankincense in our formulas for its bioactive properties as well as for its fragrance.

  • French green clay, so named because it was initially sourced only in France, has a silky feeling.

It gets its color from a combination of decomposed plant matter and iron oxide.

Highly absorbent, French green clay is useful for oily and acne-prone skin, to detoxify, to reduce the appearance of pores, and to even out skin tone.

It is recommended to use French Green clay no more than once per week until you know how your skin reacts - and to please make sure to hydrate your skin immediately after use.

  • Fuller’s Earth is a clay whose absorbent and exfoliant properties make it an excellent ingredient for oily and acne-prone skin.

While, like Bentonite clay, it will help draw impurities from the surface of the skin, Fuller’s Earth also has lightening and brightening properties which make it an appropriate choice for reducing the appearance of dark spots and of acne scars.

It is recommended to use Fuller’s Earth no more than once per week until you know how your skin reacts - and to please make sure to hydrate your skin immediately after use.

Fascinatingly, some β-diketones can exhibit fluorescence, a fact which might particularly appeal to those interested in the emerging field of the study of biophotons, in general.

The usage in traditional remedies of β-diketone-rich extracts obtained by plants like Turmeric and Hypericum Perforatum dates back to ancient times, and their beneficial effects are historically recognized.

  • Jasmine holds a unique place in perfumery, being reputedly among the principal ingredients of more than 80% of all finer perfumes and a third of all men’s fragrances.

  • Neroli oil restores luminosity the skin. It improves the appearance of scars and stretch marks. This organic Neroli essential oil comes from Egypt and brings with it a powerful but subtle, uplifting, floral aroma - fresh, sweet, and with a terpene-like effect.

The fact that it typically takes fully 2.2 pounds (1 kilogram) of blossoms to yield just 1 gram (about 1 milliliter) of essential oil, a ratio of 1,000:1, means that neroli oils are among the most likely to be adulterated. Therefore, our supplier now verifies the chemical analysis of their neroli oils through a third-party testing lab.

    What’s in a name?

Neroli - or orange blossom scent - first became fashionable near the end of the 17th century when Marie-Anne de La Trémoille (of France, Spain and Rome), Duchess of Bracciano, self-styled “Princesse des Ursins,” and later dubbed Princess of Nerola (after the Roman district), introduced it to fashionable society.

She loved the scent of orange blossoms so much, it is said, that she used it to perfume her clothes and her bath.

Since then, this exquisite essence has come to be known as Neroli.

Today, Neroli essential oil enjoys wide use both in perfumery and in skin care, especially for dry and mature skin.

We use Neroli essential oil in our formulas for its bioactive properties as well as for its fragrance.

Our organic Sweet orange essential oil preserves the sweet, tangy aroma of fresh-cut oranges.

Cold-pressed citrus peel essential oils are not merely byproducts of the juice industry, but count as even more precious derivatives, their value exceeding that of the juice even though oil amounts to only about o.4-0.7% compared to juice at 30-35% of the weight of the oranges used.

Because residues of agri-chemicals accumulate particularly in the outer peels of regularly commercially grown citrus fruits, and can be detected in their cold-pressed oils, wild-grown or organic citrus peels (such as used to produce the essential oil we choose) are preferred for use in aromatherapy preparations as well as in natural skin products like ours.

There are records of its use in TCM, Traditional Chinese Medicine, between 420 and 589 CE, possibly following importation from the Philippines.

Only the top 3-5 opposing layers of mature leaves are suitable for harvesting for this oil, which is only distilled following the careful, controlled drying of the leaves out of direct sunlight but avoiding any damp and molding.

In this way, the leaves may be harvested 3-4 times a year during the usually three-years-long lifespan of the plant.

Apart from Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine, patchouli is incorporated in foods and beverages, in cosmetics and skin care, and as an insect repellent.

  • Pea extract is derived from peas (Pisum sativum) which have been dissolved in water.

Ours is made by a cold-press method to preserve nutrients.

It is used for its skin-tightening effects.

Additionally, because cells treated with it produce less melanin, it is used to effect a lighter and brighter skin, so that it may be applied to dark spots or areas of hyperpigmentation.

In addition, this pea extract contains vitamin B3, niacinamide, deficiencies of which can cause dermatitis and irritation.

  • The Prunus persica (peach) kernel oil used by us is cold-pressed.

It has similar properties to apricot kernel oil and sweet almond oil. Peach kernel oil is a naturally light oil and rapidly absorbed. It smooths and hydrates the skin and improves the overall skin barrier function.

Peach kernel oil is particularly suited to dry, sensitive, irritated and mature skin.

  • Ever suspected that pomegranates provide us with unique nutrients? If you did, you may be right: punicic acid, an omega-5 fatty acid which constitutes nearly 74% of this organic, CO2-extracted pomegranate oil, is said to be almost unique to pomegranates and, when ingested, may be exceptionally nutritious.

Applied to skin, it feels rich and luxurious in texture.

It’s an oil which can be combined beautifully with other carrier oils, too, and, either alone or in combination, it supports the elasticity of the skin and may improve the appearance of aging and sun-damaged skin.

In addition, this oil also contains conjugated alpha-linolenic acid isomers, linoleic acid and oleic acid, and has a variety of antioxidant constituents.

  • The Poria cocos mushroom has been used in TCM, traditional Chinese medicine, for millennia. It’s believed that the PCP or Poria cocos polysaccharide - which accounts for about 84% of the dried sclerotia – is responsible for most of its bioactive effects.

Used consistently, it regulates sebum production, detoxifies and shrinks enlarged pores, leaving you with more even and refreshed skin tone and texture.

  • This is a simple, effective preservative.

This salt is an inactive form of sorbic acid, to which it converts at lower pH's. It does occur in nature - in fruits such as mountain ash berries, for instance, but almost all (nature-identical) sorbic acid is produced synthetically nowadays.

  • A humectant, solvent and emollient, propanediol has been described as an overachieving skin care product.

A product of (renewable) corn sugar fermentation, this all-rounder is 100% natural, despite its artificial sounding name, and is actually used to replace petroleum-based glycols in many cosmetics.

As humectant (moisture retainer), emollient (skin softener), and solvent, it helps boost the skin penetration of other active ingredients.

  • A polysaccharide made up of maltotriose units, this is naturally produced from starch by the fungus, Aureobasidium pullulans, and is used for its rapid skin-tightening effect.

  • Vitamin A is included in cosmetic products in order to enhance the appearance of one’s skin by improving its tone, resilience and smoothness.

  • Description: Rose de Mai OTTO

INCI Name: Rosa Centifolia Flower Oil

Growing/Harvesting Method: 100% Natural; Ethically sourced

    Plant Part Used: Flowers

    Extraction Method: Hydrodistilled

    Country of Origin: Morocco

Aroma Profile: full aromatic charge of pure rose

    Contraindications: none known

    Reported and Historical Uses:

Skin: Suitable for all skin types, especially dry and mature; unique combination of antioxidants makes it beneficial for slowing down free radical damage and diminishing signs of aging

Emotional Body: inspires mental calmness and emotional stability; comforting; balancing; rejuvenating; aphrodisiac; ritual annointing

Rose de Mai generally blooms in the month of May and is known as the “hundred petaled rose” or “painter’s rose” for its frequent featuring in classic paintings. Because of its gentle aroma and ability to be used safely in skin care applications, as well as for anointing, we use Rosa centifolia from Egypt. It is certified organic and maintains all the qualities of more potent rose absolutes and ottos used exclusively in perfumery.

Romantic roses of every color have long been revered as heart-openers, and while many of the 400+ chemical constituents of Rosa centifolia are present in only minute amounts, they contribute to the sublime and nuanced fragrance we call “rose.”

We use this particular organic rose extract in our formulas for its bioactive properties as well as for its fragrance.

  • A hydrosol, also known as a herbal distillate, hydrolat, floral water, hydrolate or essential water, is produced by the same or a similar manner to essential oils: when the essential oil has been removed from the top of a distillate, what is left behind is the essential water, or hydrosol. It includes some essential oils in colloidal suspension as well as other water-soluble components

Commonly used hydrosols in skin care include rose water, orange flower water, and witch hazel, while rosemary, oregano, and thyme are hydrosols that may be used in food manufacturing.

This rose geranium hydrosol we use has been called "the best friend of the skin,” being suitable for all ages and skin types, and can bring much needed moisture to dehydrated skin. It is certified organic and from the USA.

The gentleness of hydrosols, in general, is especially suited for children, the elderly, and those with pronounced skin sensitivities. They also offer unique avenues through which to experience the life-force of plants in its countless manifestations.

  • We use both the carrier oil form of Rosehip seed as well as the CO2 extract, depending on the application needed. Our CO2 extract is organic from the USA. The carrier oil is unrefined organic and has multiple sources.

Though rose hips, the fruiting bodies of roses, are said to contain 20 times the vitamin C content of oranges, the CO2 extract does not contain this water-soluble vitamin.

It is rich, however, in fat-soluble vitamins A and E, as well as containing all three essential fatty acids.

All five of these natural ingredients may help the recovery of damaged skin. Rosehip has been historically used as a luxury panacea for mature skin. It is known to lighten and brighten dark spots, boost collagen production, improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, moisturize, reduce the appearance of scars, and the list goes on.

The deep color of this extract is due to its richness in carotenoids.

The wild rose, or dog rose, Rosa canina, is native to Europe, Asia and N. Africa.

  • Our certified organic rosemary antioxidant is an oil-soluble, CO2 extract derived from the leaves of Salvia rosmarinus. We source this extract from Greece.

A viscous liquid even richer in natural antioxidant properties than mixed tocopherols, it has a mild rosemary aroma.

This hardy perennial is a favorite of bees, aromatherapists and lovers of blue flowers.

Of all the natural antioxidants, rosemary has consistently shown some of the highest activity.

This has been attributed to two phenolic diterpenes – carnosol and carnosic acid – but the presence of α-pinene, bornyl acetate, camphor and 1,8-cineole amplifies these preservative qualities.

  • Rosemary essential oil is produced by steam distilling the flowering tops of this bush-like herb.

It is part of the botanical family called Lamiaceae, and is a botanical relative of lavender, sage, basil, peppermint and patchouli, and it shares benefits similar to those of these other essential oils.

Many of us know rosemary as a culinary herb, so used by many different cultures worldwide.

The plant is an evergreen aromatic shrub which grows to between three and six feet tall.

Rosemary is native to the Mediterranean region.

There it grows mostly along the seashore, in sandy drier areas.

Its Latin name, Rosmarinus officinalis, means “Dew of the Sea,” and today we can find rosemary growing in a lot of different regions around the world, like Morocco, Spain, South Africa, North America, Europe, Asia and the UK.

We use organic rosemary essential oil from Tunisia in our formulas for its bioactive properties as well as for its fragrance.

  • The plants for this essential oil were wild-harvested in France.

St. John’s Wort is an herb that is associated with the sun and is harvested traditionally at midsummer, around the solstice, when the flowers are fresh and yellow.

But for the essential oil, St. John’s Wort is harvested when the flowers actually start to burn up and turn brown from the sun’s power, a little after the solstice.

Its solar power comes across in its sweet, strong aroma.

Aromatherapists and others turn to this oil when protection is needed.

It is called St. John’s Wort after the Biblical character, John the Baptist, whose feast day falls in midsummer, on June 24.

Also called “Sol terrestris,” “Earthly sun,” it is called upon to help folks lighten up, pushing away darkness and inertia, and replacing them with a fierce light and energy.

This St. John’s Wort essential oil is produced by French medicinal plant producers and harvesters. Their mission is very strict regarding the environment, the conservation of plant resources and the quality of distillation. This wild-crafted essential oil comes from producers operating in rural, mountainous, non-polluted areas.

We use St. John’s Wort essential oil in our formulas for its bioactive properties as well as for its fragrance.

  • An extract from the berries of Sea buckthorn, which have understandably been called a "superfruit."

Sea buckthorn oil is derived from the berries of the sea buckthorn plant (Hippophae rhamnoides) and has gained popularity in the world of skincare and cosmetics due to its numerous potential benefits for the skin. Here are some of the cosmetic benefits of sea buckthorn oil:

Moisturizing: Sea buckthorn oil is rich in fatty acids, particularly omega-7 palmitoleic acid. This helps to moisturize and hydrate the skin, making it a valuable ingredient in moisturizers, serums, and creams for dry and dehydrated skin.

Anti-aging: The oil is also packed with antioxidants, including vitamins C and E, which help protect the skin from free radical damage. This can reduce the signs of premature aging, such as fine lines and wrinkles.

Skin repair: Sea buckthorn oil contains beta-carotene and other carotenoids that can promote skin repair and regeneration. It may be beneficial for healing wounds, scars, and sunburned skin.

Anti-inflammatory: Sea buckthorn oil has anti-inflammatory properties that can help soothe irritated skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, and rosacea. It may also reduce redness and inflammation associated with acne.

UV protection: Some studies suggest that sea buckthorn oil may offer limited natural UV protection due to its carotenoid content. However, it should not be used as a substitute for sunscreen.

Skin brightening: The high vitamin C content in sea buckthorn oil can help brighten the skin and even out skin tone. It may fade hyperpigmentation and age spots over time.

Collagen production: The oil contains nutrients that may stimulate collagen production, which is essential for maintaining skin elasticity and firmness.

Acne treatment: Sea buckthorn oil's anti-inflammatory properties can be beneficial for acne-prone skin. It can help reduce the redness and swelling associated with pimples, making it a suitable ingredient in acne skincare products.

Hydration barrier: It forms a protective barrier on the skin's surface, helping to lock in moisture and prevent water loss, which is essential for maintaining a healthy skin barrier.

Nourishment: Sea buckthorn oil provides essential vitamins and nutrients to the skin, promoting overall skin health and radiance.

It's worth noting that while sea buckthorn oil offers these potential benefits, individual skin types and sensitivities can vary. It's a good idea to perform a patch test before using any new skincare product containing sea buckthorn oil to ensure it doesn't cause any adverse reactions. Additionally, consult with a dermatologist or skincare professional for personalized advice on incorporating sea buckthorn oil into your skincare routine

These berries have long been used as food and in traditional medicines, notably in Tibet and in China, as well as in skin preparations.

The hardy shrub takes its name, Hippophae, from the Greek words, hippo, horse, and pahos, shining.

The story goes that, in ancient times, sick and injured horses were left in the wild.

When these animals were later to be found strong, fat, healthy and shining, their recoveries were considered due, at least in part, to the leaves, twigs and berries of Sea buckthorn they had ingested.

The CO2 extract is rich in carotenoids, and our particular extract also contains a small percentage of potent rosemary CO2 antioxidant to help maintain its freshness.

Sea buckthorns are particularly hardy shrubs which tend to grow in regions where their would-be competitors can't hack the salt, the dryness or the cold, as they berries busily concentrate the goodies which their carrier oil subsequently places at our disposal.

  • Seaweed demonstrates a wide range of bioactive properties which make it a perfect fit for natural skin care. Phenolic compounds found in some seaweed are shown to be anti-oxidant, anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory and more.

We use seaweed flakes in some of our dry formulas.

  • Shea Butter protects the skin from environmental damage and exhibits some protection from the effects of UVB rays, which makes it a wonderful ingredient for sun protection. Enriched with Vitamin F, it soothes rough, dry and chapped skin.

While shea butter is technically a tree nut product, unlike most other tree nuts, it contains a very low quantity of allergy-triggering proteins, and there are no documented cases of a shea butter allergy.

This lipid-restoring butter absorbs quickly and completely into the skin, leaving no oily residue.

It has anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, antifungal and antioxidant properties which all add up to healthier skin barrier function. When combining these properties with the triterpenes found in shea butter, your skin will be defended from the worst of environmental and biological stressors.

Our refined shea butter is Certified Organic and Fair Trade Certified.

Numerous different sea salts are used to take full advantage of the differing mineral contents, color and texture.

  • Sodium lactate is used as a powerful humectant - or hydrating agent - in our formulas, as well as a pH adjuster. It is produced through the fermentation of a sugar source, followed by a neutralization of the lactic acid formed.

In addition to its humectant properties, it is a keratoplastic - meaning it helps whisk away dead skin cells, leaving the skin appearing more radiant.

  • NaOH, or lye or caustic soda, this salt has long been used and still is today in the making of soaps, be it in farmhouse or urban kitchens or on an industrial scale.

  • Sodium PCA is used as a humectant booster.

Surprisingly enough, this is an organic compound which occurs naturally in the skin, helping to help boost hydration - literally pulling moisture from the air.

The form of Sodium PCA we use is naturally derived and cruelty free.

  • Phytic acid is a cyclic acid and its sodium salt, sodium phytate, is widely found in nature, particularly in the bran and seeds of various plants, where it functions as a major store of phosphorus.

This salt is used as a natural chelating agent: by binding metals necessary for microbial reproduction, sodium phytate acts as a preservative.

Additionally, sodium phytate acts as a moisturizer, improving skin elasticity.

  • As a prebiotic ingredient, sorbitol helps support a healthy skin microbiome. It helps to nourish beneficial bacteria on the skin, thereby fighting harmful bacteria which can cause breakouts and inflammation.

Sorbitol is commonly found in many fruits, but may also be created in a lab as a “bio-identical” compound. It is a carbohydrate or “sugar alcohol” and is used as a highly effective humectant, emulsifier and texture improver.

  • This olive-derived emulsifier is used in skin care as an emollient and cleanser.

  • Squalane is the hydrogenated form of squalene. Squalene is found in the sebum of human skin and believed to lubricate and protect it.

Squalene used to be obtained from shark liver oils, but nowadays the cosmetics industry mostly uses a hydrogenated form called Squalane, which is highly stable and far more sustainable.

Most sources come from olive trees, but we have found a source which produces squalane from highly sustainable Bon-Sucro certified sugar cane.

Squalane moisturizes, repairs, smooths and brightens skin surface.

  • Organic tapioca starch is used in some of our dry formulations to help disperse essential oils into water for bathing.

  • This organic oil, also known as melaleuca oil, is sourced from tea trees, Melaleuca alternifolia, of the myrtle family, Myrtaceae, grown in Australia, where it is a native of parts of Queensland and New South Wales.

Treasured as an aroma with cleansing, purifying powers, tea tree oil finds wide use in cleansing applications.

We use tea tree essential oil in our formulas for its bioactive properties as well as for its fragrance.

  • Mixed Tocopherols are, simply, Vitamin E obtained from multiple sources.
